Updated: Feb 4, 2021

After 50 years or sometimes even before this age, some seniors start to gain weight. The process is usually always the same: you start to tolerate 2 or 3 extra pounds, then you change the size of your clothes. This is the start of the process ...

The causes of weight gain after 50 are multiple

  • Food

  • Lack of physical activity

  • Changes in our bodies due to age For women, menopause can be a difficult time to experience for a number of reasons. He is often credited with weight gain. It would be on average 4 to 5 kg. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, sedentarization, a decrease in basal metabolism or a change in diet can promote weight gain. For men, they have a lower fat mass than women. With age, they tend to gain stomach if they eat too much food or exercise less.

To avoid gaining weight, move and eat well!

With age, nutritional needs change . Contrary to popular belief, you should not eat less (otherwise you will suffer from undernutrition) but differently. The “eat and move” program advises seniors to:

  • Consume 3 to 4 dairy products per day

  • Decrease salt intake especially for those who have a problem with water retention

  • Eat at fixed times and avoid skipping meals which promotes snacking

  • Drink water at will and reduce alcohol consumption

  • Limit the intake of fat. Watch out for those that are hidden!

  • Exercise: 30 minutes per day

There is a nutrition guide published by the national health nutrition program which gives advice for people aged 55 and over.
